Spring has awoken the fauna and flora of Góra Gradowa, bringing with it new attractions to Hevelianum. Even though the indoor exhibitions remain closed, you can still enjoy our online astronomy demonstrations, and starting 11 April you can also experiment with our educators via Zoom as part of the ‘Home laboratory’ workshop. This year is the 410th birthday of Johannes Hevelius, and April is the month when we focus on the achievements of his talented wife – Elisabeth Koopmann.

A balloon filled with carbon dioxide, a chemical yoyo and a kitchen volcano? You can experience all of this with the ‘Home laboratory’ workshops taught by our educators every Sunday in April at 11:00 AM. The workshops are dedicated for children aged 5 to 10 and are taught using Zoom. Upon purchasing a ticket for PLN 10, you will receive an email containing a link to the workshop and the list of ingredients necessary to perform the experiments. The reagents you can find in your kitchen have a great many interesting properties…

Sundays in April are also the perfect time to watch the night sky without leaving the house. During our 1:00 PM astronomy demonstrations you can check the current position of the Sun in the sky, discover which sign of the zodiac is currently the dominant one, search for stars and talk to the organisers. The rules for joining are the same as for ‘Home laboratory’ – an invite link is sent when you purchase a PLN 10 ticket.

Those who long for nature are invited to Góra Gradowa and our “Chasing Nature” event. How many beehives are there in the apiary? Which of the birds begins to sing the earliest? What flora and fauna can we find in the Knowledge Avenue? You can find answers to these questions by following the trail set in the task sheet, which you can download from the Hevelianum website and print at home: hevelianum.pl/wydarzenia/podchody-z-przyroda.

As you are taking a walk around Góra Gradowa, be sure to visit the restored post-military buildings (old shelters, artillery depots and munitions laboratories) – you can find the free ‘History of the Fort’ exhibition there. The outdoor exhibitions present episodes from the fort’s past and talk about the intricacies of the art of war. In April the exhibition is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, as well as Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The shop right next to the ticket offices is open all the time (Tue-Fri, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, Sat-Sun, 10:00 AM-6:00 PM), offering unique souvenirs not available anywhere else. These include ecological gadgets straight from the Hevelianum apiary and honey collected from Góra Gradowa. Those with a penchant for history can purchase a short history of Góra Gradowa written by historian Jan Daniluk.

Two contests are currently ongoing – AstroCamera for photographers (hevelianum.pl/konkurs-astrocamera) and, until the end of May, our mapping contest titled ‘Hevelius – a hipster or a scholar?’, where the winning entry will be displayed on the wall of the historic Artillery Depot (janheweliusz.pl/konkurs_mapping).

This year is the 410th birthday of Johannes Hevelius, our patron, and April is the month when we focus on the achievements of his talented wife – Elisabeth Koopmann-Hevelius, who was also an astronomer. This is why the spotlight will be on the women in the sciences – on 14 April Dr Agata Kołodziejczyk, Research Project Director at Astro Tech and Bioastronautics Research and expert in neurobiology and astrobiolgy, will take part in the ‘Nauka Mówi’ series of discussions about science. On 24 April Elizabeth Koopmann will be honoured with a salvo from a replica cannon named after her, and 25 April is when female astronomers take the stage to talk about their work. A detailed programme will be made available at janheweliusz.pl.
